Kozani Square07/11
The new main square in Kozani serves both the everyday and the monumental; the central part takes the form of a gently sunken ellipse. Its surface is emptied of steps, obstacles and bushes. Radial lines project from the important public buildings on its periphery and join at the squares center, organizing the topography and paving. The squares new two dimensional geometry highlights the architecture of its context. The slight slope drives activity inside. All furnishing, seating and equipment happen along the perimeter which is densely planted to provide rich shade. Hidden floor lighting transforms the square into a mirror of the night sky at late hours.status: competition
