Dionysiou Aeropagitou- Legitimization 2

05/08

cocoon

The competition concerned the back facades of two existing buildings that stand directly in front of the new Acropolis Museum, on Dionisiou Aeropagitou Street. The two facades, originally not intended to be seen, suddenly found themselves facing the front of the museum, mediating between it and the Ancient Rock. Point Supreme Architects submitted two complementary entries that are simultaneously opposites and similar, coinciding and contradicting. They both abstract the informal back facades and evoke aspects of ancient iconography.

In ‘Cocoon’, the facades are treated as a wrapped sculpture whose ripples, shadows and textures have been softened or erased. Behind it the Acropolis now seems even more real than before.  In ‘Gold’, all the elements of the facades are rendered gold, so that the problem of the coexistence of formal and informal, ‘high’ and ‘low’ is simply solved with the symbolic transformation of the ‘low’ into ‘high’ in the most literal sense.
